What Does the Bible Say About Dinosaurs?

Dinosaurs are related to some of the most common questions that people ask about their faith. The idea that dinosaurs might have used to exist brings up questions like, “Are there dinosaurs around today?” and “What does the Bible say about Dinosaurs?”

What Does the Bible Say About Dinosaurs

The word “dinosaur” refers to a class of reptiles that scientists classify as Dinosauria. According to fossil records and carbon dating, the species (such as the T-Rex) walked the Earth at least 243 to 233 million years in the past.

We are learning more about dinosaurs, their appearance and their habits all the time. The knowledge we know about is constantly expanding, as more fossil records are discovered by archaeologists – sometimes by accident!

For example, we used to think that the T-Rex was the angriest and most ferocious of all the dinosaurs. Today, we are closer to knowing that the T-Rex does not look at all like it was depicted in “Jurassic Park” movies – but instead, covered in feathers.

Dinosaurs can raise important questions for the faithful;, and even just for people who are intersted in the historical accounts presented to us in the Bible.

The Bible says that God created the heavens, Earth and everything amongst it. But what does the Bible say about dinosaurs?

Do Dinosaurs Really Exist?

Yes, dinosaurs really exist.

We know that dinosaurs exist thanks to fossil records, archaeological digs and genetic evidence found in animals that are alive today.

The idea that dinosaurs exist does not contradict the Bible or its Word in any way. Dinosaurs, just like any other animals that are mentioned in the creation, were still created by the Lord.

When the Bible talks about “all creatures”, it speaks of everything that was (and is right now) alive on the planet. This includes all the animals, insects, and life under the sea that people are still learning more about every day.

Can Dinosaurs Prove Or Disprove Anything?

The study and existence of dinosaurs cannot disprove anything within the Bible. If you accept what the Bible says as truth, then you can also accept that God created many animals – some of which are today considered extinct, rare or might still be undiscovered.

Bible verses support fossil discovery.

When Genesis talks about creation throughout, it refers to the creation of all things, including dinosaurs. Several verses throughout the Bible point to mankind as the caretakers of all the creation we can see (and many of it that we can’t).

Are There Dinosaurs Around Today?

Yes, there are still dinosaurs around today.

The “dinosaurs” that we read about and see on television existed a very long time ago. There are still different types of dinosaurs around today – or at least, reptiles and other creatures that still carry some reptile traces from long ago.

The chicken is close to the T-Rex. Today, we know enough about the T-Rex to know that it wasn’t necessarily as fearsome as movies like “Jurassic Park” made them look. Instead, the T-Rex was likely covered in feathers.

Lizards and other reptiles, like the rock monitor, are still close to what dinosaurs would have been in ancient times.

The Bible is clear about the different forms of creation that God placed on the planet (and told man as early as Adam and Eve to act as custodians or caretakers of the Earth) – even though the Bible could not possibly mention every species of animal that has walked the planet.

What Does The Bible Say About Dinosaurs?

The Bible says a lot about dinosaurs and creation.

The discovery of dinosaurs and everything that we have found out about them so far can be a lot to take in – and it can bring a lot of questions about faith and the Bible from believers.

The good news is that the answer to most of these questions can be found within the Bible.

The Word has many verses which deal with creation, and creatures (such as Leviathan) that some believers interpret to refer to dinosaurs.

What Does the Bible Say About Dinosaurs

Did God Create the Dinosaurs?

According to the Bible, God created all livin, material and nonmaterial things.

The very start of Genesis talks about God and the creation of Heaven and Earth. Genesis first says that the Lord created living creatures, cattle, creeping creatures and beasts of the Earth.

This is an important verse, because Genesis talks about all creations that God placed on the Earth. This includes everything from snakes to insects, going as far back as the very beginning of creation.

God created all living things, and yes, God also created the dinosaurs.

“And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.” Genesis 1:24

The book of Genesis continues to tell us even more about how the Earth was created, and what God created with it. He tells the first people that they are to be the custodians of what He has created – including the dinosaurs and everything else we might see today.

“And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have
given every green plant for food.” And it was so.” Genesis 1:29-30

God created all living things since the beginning of creation: including the dinosaurs.

Are There Dinosaurs in the Bible?

Yes, there are dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible.

One of the most prominent references that appear in the Bible comes from the book of Job. This is one of the oldest books to the Bible, and also makes one of the most obvious references to what scholars believe could have been dinosaurs.

The verse talks about a “behemoth”, which could refer to the creature’s majestic size. Some of the other characteristics that are mentioned in this verse is that this “behemotH” eats grass, but has a tail – and has bones like “beams of bronze”.

It must have been quite something to see!

If you imagine what modern people know about dinosaurs today, the Bible supports them – and in some verses, even describes what could have been dinosaurs in its time.

While not all dinosaur species existed together with humans, some clearly did – and both what we have found in archaeological digs and what the Bible says both support the same truth.

“Look now at the behemoth, which I made along with you; he
eats grass like an ox. See now, his strength is in his hips, and his power is in his stomach muscles. He moves his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are tightly knit. His bones are like beams of bronze, his ribs like bars of iron. He is the first of the ways of God; only He who made him can bring near His sword.”

Other references in the Bible point to Leviathan, a great creature that lives in the water. It could be one more piece of evidence in the Bible that speaks of large, living things we don’t necessarily see alive today.

“In that day the Lord with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea.”
Isaiah 27:1

Did the Flood Wipe Out the Dinosaurs?

We know that a large-scale disaster wiped most dinosaurs from the face of the Earth, and left only certain animals and reptiles to remain. This is one more fact that we can consider consistent with the Bible – and most people, even those who do not read the Bible very often, will know where.

In Genesis, several Bible verses reference the Great Flood.

It is certainly possible that a disaster like the Great Flood contributed to some fossil evidence that we have today.

Many of the fossils that we find are so well preserved thanks to the fact that it was covered in water and soil. This, again, can point to the flood as a potential cause for extinction.

“And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth.” Genesis 6:13

Are There Still Dinosaurs Today?

According to what we know about fossil evidence and archaeological discoveries, yes.

Some animals (like chickens and reptiles) are still very close to dinosaurs in their traits – and some animals, like rock monitors, have remained the same in their appearance since the start of creation.

The Bible supports the existence of dinosaurs, and with verses throughout.

“Here is the sea, great and wide, which teems with creatures innumerable, living things both small and great. There go the ships, and Leviathan, which you formed to play in it.”Psalm 104:25-26
