18 Prayers for Marriage and Married Couples

The sacred union known as marriage was instituted by God from the beginning of time as a lasting obligation between a man and a woman to sacrificially love their spouse in the same way that Jesus loves us.

Prayers for Marriage
“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure.” Hebrews 13:4a

God created marriage, not only for the joy of the husband and wife, but also for the purpose of passing down spiritual truth from one generation to the next in the context of the biblical family. Husbands and wives should pray daily that they will have a strong marriage that honors God and models the type of love that He has for each of us. It is for that reason that God also instituted and sealed the union of the husband and wife in the holy bonds of matrimony as a visible representation of His relationship with us. (See Ephesians 5:21-23).

A Prayer for Married Couples

Use this prayer at a wedding ceremony or at a wedding anniversary celebration as a prayer of blessing over the married couple.

“Father God, we acknowledge that You instituted marriage as a sacred union between a husband and wife for their entire life. So, today we ask for your blessing and approval upon this man and woman.

As they reflect upon their marriage vows, I pray that they will know more days of riches rather than days of poverty, more days of health rather than days of sickness, and more days of better rather than days of worse. However, when those difficult days do come, I pray that they will remember their vows to love each other unconditionally and sacrificially.

I also pray that the love that first brought them together will grow stronger each day for the rest of their lives. I ask that the bonds of their marriage would be sealed by Your Holy Spirit.

Therefore, in holy reverence, I beseech your blessings upon their marriage and ask that You fill their days as husband and wife with happiness and love. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Conclusion

The vows that husbands and wives make to one another on their wedding day are to be repeated in both words and actions throughout the lives of the married couple. These vows are pledges of devotion not only to the husband or wife, but also to God.

Numbers 30:2-4 instructs husbands and wives concerning their vows in this way: When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said. When a young woman still living in her father’s household makes a vow to the Lord or obligates herself by a pledge and her father hears about her vow or pledge but says nothing to her, then all her vows and every pledge by which she obligated herself will stand.

For these reasons, we should seek God’s blessing upon our marriage by appealing to Him through prayer that we would maintain our vows of sacrificial love for one another. Therefore, consider using one of the following prayers as a guide in praying for your own marriage.
